Haverhill went into this game knowing that less than a win would mean playing in a lower division next season. Haverhill won the toss and decided to bowl first against a very strong melford side consisting of no less than 4 first team players, Jack Mitchinson and Martyn Wilkins opened the bowling and both bowled with great accuracy with only 11 runs coming from the first 10 over’s.
Wilkins made the break through in the fourth over having Robirosa caught behind for 3 then Byford for 1 in his 9th over. Mitchinsons first 6 over’s only costing 6 runs. Bowling changes were then made and the run rate started to increase slowly with the dangerous Skeggs starting to cut lose with good support from Chapman at the other end.
Haverhill were beginning to struggle to contain the scoring rate with Skeggs hitting the ball to the boundary all too often with Chapman giving good support. Skeggs finished the afternoon on 143 not out with Chapman scoring 65, Long Melford posting a good total of 236 for 3.
A good start was needed by the home side to have any chance of getting the runs, it soon became apparent it was not to be with Ben Wilkins going in the second over having scored only 1 followed very quickly by Anthony Phillips for 6 and Sam Hartshorn for 18 and Liam Savage for 5. So after 6 over’s the score was a sorry 31 for 4, Dan Wilkins came to the crease along with Tom Saville and tried to repair some of the early damage until Wilikns was caught for 12, Joey Kettle came and went for a quick 19. Tom Saville at the other end was playing a solid innings and was joined by Martyn Wilkins. With the two of them at the crease they manage to steady the fall of wickets with Tom Saville (age 15) going on to make 72 not out his highest score at senior cricket and well supported by Martyn Wilkins who finished on 35 not out.
Haverhill finishing their 40 overs on 186, 50 runs short.
With one game to play it now looks like Haverhill Sunday 2nds will be playing in division 5 next season.
Skipper Steve Saville said it was disappointing to lose however the future for the club looks bright with some good youngsters coming through at senior level. |
