Haverhill 2nds travelled to Ipswich to play at the impressive Clay Hall Farm ground hoping to keep their promotion push alive . The wicket was damp and deemed too wet for the home clubs first team to use so a swop was made so that both matches could take place . It was some surprise when the Home Captain won the toss and decided to bat first .
Steve Fox (12-2-37-5) and Martyn Wilkins (15-3-39-2) opened the bowling and after 11 overs the Hosts were 31-2 with both bowlers taking a wicket each . The third wicket fell in the 22nd over with Denny bowled by Tom Saville (6-0-25-1) . Steve Fox then returned and bowled a great spell taking a hattrick in his first over back and a five over spell of 4-19 runs . A final total of 151-9 after 45 overs was a good effort but again catches went down and even this score could have been fewer .
Haverhill opened up with Steve Fox (23) and Steve Taylor (24) as they set about the chase against a young bowling attack that started a bit wayward . Taylor was first to go with the score 0n 34 but Phil Jones (22) and Fox reached drinks with the score on 57-1 . Bowling changes had been made and runs were hard to come by as the experienced bowlers kept things tight .As the pressure built Wickets were lost and nobody could take charge of the Innings and see Haverhill home . Haverhill finished on a disappointing 139-9 to lose by 12 runs .
It was a tricky wicket but I feel our fielding let us down as more catches were dropped and the total being chased could have been lower . Catches win matches . So the promotion dream is over for this Season but I must congratulate Steve Fox forgetting his hattrick and rarity in cricket these days. |
