 Braintree - Home

Haverhill entertained Braintree 2nds at Manor Road on Saturday with the threat of showers and a wet afternoon . Haverhill were fielding a younger side due to holidays , injury and First Team call ups and had 3 Under 15's in the side .

Skipper Wilkins won the toss and decided to bowl first on a firm wicket . He opened the bowling at the Cinema End and Joey Kettle from the Pavilion End , both bowled very well and kept the Visitors quiet as runs were hard to come by . Kettle got the breakthrough with a caught and bowled with the score on 17 and Wilkins soon followed suit by having the other Opener caught behind by debutant keeper young Billy Gage with no addition to the score .

After 30 overs the Visitors were 63-3 and Wilkins had bowled an amazing spell of 15 -10-17-1 and included a sequence of 6 maidens on the trot . The Batsmen had to take some risks in the last 15 overs and wickets began to fall as Nural Hoque ( 2-49) and Dan Webb ( 3-29) picked up more wickets as well as a great runout by Joey Kettle . A fine innings of 63 by A.Sherry meant Braintree finished on 165-8 .

With Haverhill's Batting depleted by the missing players it would need a responsible effort by the Home side to chase down this score . Sam Hartshorn (44) and Phil Jones (17) put on 55 runs in only 5 overs as Hartshorn hit 16 off the first over and 9 boundaries in total before being bowled just when he seemed to be taking the game away from the Visitors . Liam Savage batted steadily as wickets tumbled at the other end as the runs dried up . Haverhill tumbled from 55-1 to 97-6 as defeat was looming . But Young Ryan Fowler batted well for 15 in partnership with Skipper Wilkins to take the score to 137-8 before he was out with the score on 142 -9 . That left Dan Webb and Nural Hoque to score 24 runs to take the home side to victory , they nurdled , pinched and played some glorious strokes to take the team to 164-9 with one over left . With the early return of the First Team adding considerable support to the home crowd it was left to Dan Webb to hit the winning runs off the first ball to give the Home side victory from the jaws of defeat . Webb finished on 9 not out and Hoque was 12 not out a very fine effort by both players .
