HORRINGER v HAVERHILL SUNDAY 2ND XI
1st August 2010.
The last two games for Haverhill Sunday 2nds have swung between the sublime and the ridiculous. Last game saw Haverhill inflict a crushing defeat upon Woolpit, this latest game away to Horringer saw Haverhill beaten in even more emphatic style. Asked to bat on a green and spongy uncovered track, Haverhill were soon in trouble losing Ben Wilkins in unlucky fashion, run out when the ball was driven back hard by Sam Hartshorn and rebounded off the bowler’s hand onto his wicket. Hartshorn went on to make 22. Apart from an entertaining cameo partnership at the end of the innings between David Saville (8 not out) and Steve Levitt (11) the rest of the batting was simply not up to the task. The Horringer opening bowlers were very good at using the track to their advantage and both swung the ball. What caused much of Haverhill’s undoing was an inability to time the ball off the pitch which was much slower than expected due to the soft surface. The final miserable total was 74 all out in the 21st over. Haverhill’s bowlers did not use the track or conditions like Horringer and runs were soon amassed. Two wickets fell to the spin of Paul Spurling before the total was reached in the 16th over. Aptitude and attitude must improve to see Haverhill safe in this division for next season.
