Haverhill Sunday firsts vs Acton 1st august 2010
Joe Woodley won the toss and elected to field on a green and dampish looking wicket. This paid immediate dividends as quick bowler Russell Davis (8-2-31-1) ripped R Garners off stump out the ground. Both opening bowlers started well but N Wright and S Whitehart opened up their shoulders smashing any full deliveries. From 17-1 off 8 the score moved to 55-1 off 11. Woodley came on and removed Wrights leg stump for 33. Young spinner Anthony Phillips (8-2-29-2) had the dangerous Whitehart for 38, well caught by Davis and Dean Sharpe (10-0-46-2) bowled Fisher for 8. Acton had reached 87-4 at drinks. After this, Sharpe and Phillips continued to bowl well and economically and picked up a wicket each to leave Acton at 131-6 with 10 overs left. Woodley (9-2-29-4) returned to ensure Acton would not reach 200. He bowled Underwood for 18 and Cole for 1. The abrasive Border came in to up the rate and hit a few boundaries to reach 16 before he was caught very well by Dan Poole after top edging another slog. A farcical run out ended proceeding to leave Acton 168 all out.
After tea, Haverhill set about chasing a below par total with an exceptionally strong batting line-up. Adam Dellar and Steve Fox opened up and put on 12 before Fox snicked Whitehart behind for 2. His brought Luke Youngs to the crease. The pair put 48 together which included sharp singles and quickly run threes. Dellar perished just before he got going, leading edging a whip through leg for 33. The normally irrepressible and brickwall Poole was bowled for 0, giving Whitehart figures of 10-1-47-3. Youngs kept going strong and could not be removed from his bubble. He nudged singles and hit any bad ball for four. He found an ally in Davis who smashed a quickfire 42 which included some great straight hits, before falling caught and bowled. Dingley also fell for 0 and it was left to Carl Bradford (10*) and Youngs (68*) to finish it off with 9 overs left. |
