Joe Woodley lost the toss and was asked to field on a notoriously bouncy and fast wicket. This paid immediate dividends as Russ Davis blew away the top 3 all bowled with quick Yorkers. Dan Poole also bowled well at the other end only going for 8 off his 6 overs (6-5-8-1) and removed the dangerous Stividarson for 12. Haverhill made every effort to give away the great early start. In total 7 catches went to the floor. However, Davis continued to run in and bowl quickly and finished with figures of 10-5-32-3. Woodley (8-2-13-3) replaced Poole and also bowled quickly and economically. Once the big hitting Cadge was well caught by Luke Youngs at deep midwicket, Walsham were all but done. Sam Pass stepped forward and removed 3 of the lower order, bowling them all with beautifully flighted leg spin. Walsham finished up on 101 all out.
In reply, Sam Hartshorn showed his growing potential with some lusty hitting to get Haverhill off a brisk start. Liam Botten (4) at the other end protected his wicket for the first 8 overs to keep Walsham from getting back into the game. Hartshorn (30) smashed any loose bowling over the top and left well outside his off stump. His thirty consisted of 7 boundaries. Both openers fell within two overs of each other and this brought the match winning partnership to the crease. Luke Youngs and Dan Poole dominated from their first balls and didn’t give Walsham a sniff. Youngs finished with a mighty fine 26 not out and Poole made his way quickly to 39 not out to propel Haverhill to victory within 20 overs. |
