Haverhill 2nds returned to Manor Road for the League match against near neighbours Long Melford 2nds . Haverhill were strengthened by the return of Steve Fox and the experienced Micky Rinaldi .
Melford won the toss and asked Haverhill to bat on a dry and dusty looking wicket . Neil Winter (28) and Phil Jones (83) opened for the Home side and set off at a rapid rate with 42 runs coming off the first 6 overs before Winter was dismissed after hitting 6 crisp boundaries . The scoring rate dropped as the Bowlers settled into a good line and after 20 overs Haverhill were 89-3 wickets . The evergreen Jones and Young Sam Hartshorn (82) shared a partnership of 136 runs before the tiring Jones was dismissed after hitting 12 fours and a six .Sam Hartshorn , batting down the order scored his runs off 70 balls and played with the freedom he enjoys scoring 11 fours and 1 six . Jason Ketteridge added a quick fire 28 and with all the Batsmen chipping in Haverhill finished on 286-8 . It was a good score against plucky opponents who never gave in .
Long Melford began their reply in aggressive mood with D.Bigg (15) and R.Black (30) playing some impressive shots before Steven Fox (2-58) got the breakthrough and Skipper Martyn Wilkins bowling tightly at the other end . Dan Webb was introduced into the attack as first change and bowled a very tidy spell of 10-4-11-2 and Joey Kettle also bowled well for his figures of 7-2-23-1 . Several part-time bowlers were employed to find a chink in the visitors armour but they batted resiliently and J.Burton hit an entertaining 57 before falling to a great catch from keeper Ketteridge off the golden arm of Phil Jones who took 2 wickets for 6 runs to seal the Man of the Match award . Long Melford finished on 159-7 and batted well . Haverhill won by 127 runs and march on to Kesgrave next week . Once again we failed to bowl out our Opponents but winning is more important as the Season moves on .
