 Walsham-le-Willows 1sts - Home

Haverhill Sunday 1sts vs Walsham le Willows
Division one
11th july 2010

An inspirational spell of bowling from Captain Joe Woodley and 2 solid innings from Simon and Luke Youngs gave Haverhill a first vital win this season.

Haverhill lost the toss and were asked to field on a hot day. After initial close LBW decisions went against Woodley, Bryant was finally caught behind thanks to a good catch from Dingley. Woodley then destroyed Jackson and Wauges stumps with some late swing. This left Walsham reeling at 31-3. Davis at the other end bowled very economically to keep up the pressure. Simon Youngs replaced Woodley and bowled his 10 overs straight off the reel. He bowled miserly and masterfully to finish with figures of 10-3-21-3. The dangerous Stevenson was well caught by Davis for 50, Davis and Rothan quickly followed to leave Walsham struggling on 116-7. Runs flowed a little bit more freely at the other end, however Woodley (9.5-2-30-5) returned to blow away the tail and secure his five wicket haul.  The other wickets fell thanks to 2 great run outs from Phil Dingley and Anthony Phillips. Walsham finished up on 154 all out.

In reply, Haverhill openers S Youngs and Fox started steadily but crucially held firm. This meant any loose bowling they could pounce on and moved Haverhill effortlessly onto 60-0 off 20. Fox nudged the singles whilst Youngs punished the bad ball. Youngs fell for 30 to bring his son, Luke to the crease. Fox soon followed and Youngs and Phillips built a match winning 65 partnership. Both were slow to get in but once in, and especially L Youngs (32), were devastating with an array of cover and back foot drives. At 115-2, both fell quickly as did Davis and Williams. Dingley (14*) and Sharpe (15*) as ever held firm and saw Haverhill home with 3 overs left to spare with some powerful hitting.
