Match report Sudbury 1sts vs Haverhill 1sts
A great spirited performance from Haverhill breathed life back into their season. Although they lost by 2 runs, this has given the team renewed hope they can secure enough wins to survive in division one. Haverhill won the toss and decided to field first on a hard and bouncy track. Woodley and Davis bowled quickly and accurately to restrict Sudbury to 47-2 off 10. Davis had removed both openers thanks to 2 great catches from Phillips and Kettle. Sam Pass also bowled well without luck again, as did Joey Kettle. The Sudbury innings started to fall apart with the introduction of first team wicketkeeper, Luke Youngs into the bowling attack. His accurate and canny bowling produced 2 wickets for only 26 runs off 6 overs. Anthony Phillips also bowled exceptionally well earning figures of 3-27. E was aided by some brilliant catches from Dingley and Wigan. Woodley returned to remove the dangerous Coetzee plumb LBW and pick up Poulson for 4. Sudbury were all out for 213. It must be noted the fielding and catching performance was exceptional and morale was sky high as Haverhill fought hard.
In reply, Haverhills best 2 youth stars, Youngs and Phillips opened the batting. Perhaps the barrage from the pacey Smith helped Poulson at the other end gain both openers for only 1 each. Davis and Wigan also quickly followed to leave Haverhill devastated at 27-4. Dingley and Williams set about rebuilding with watchful defending and positive hitting. They put on a 60 partership until Dingley was bowled for 29. Kettle soon followed for 5. Woodley and Williams also rebuilt and to push Haverhill to 129 before Woodley fell LBW for 10. Williams was going well at the other end but was caught and bowled for a good 38 in the same over. With the heart ripped out of Haverhill at 120-7, what happened next was one of the truly great partnerships. Dean Sharpe and Sam Pass put on 70 runs in 10 overs to bring victory within Haverhills grasp. Sharpe smashed everything and Pass played beautifully to give him the strike. Sudbury first team lightening fast bowler Coetzee came on to remove Sharpe for a heroic and inspiring 47.Young Aaron Forshaw came in with 8 needed. Pass hit Halliday for a vital boundary and took a single to leave Forshaw at the mercy of Halliday. He was bowled with Haverhill needing 2 runs for victory. Pass was left stranded on 28 after having played the innings of his life. |
