Haverhill 2nds v Sudbury 2nds
Sunday 4th July 2010.
Sudbury won the toss and batted on our parched Manor Road ground. A steady four an over start was made until the tenth over when Steve Saville took a sharp catch off Tom Saville’s bowling. Dave Shropshire and Brian Hyett then set about forming a solid partnership worth 137 runs before Shropshire finally went well caught by Steve Levitt off the tempting spin of Paul Spurling for 86 and Hyett bowled by Steve Saville for 61. This partnership and the heat had also sapped the strength and determination of Haverhill’s fielders; a few young heads were down. One more wicket each for Tom Saville and Paul Spurling meant Sudbury ended with 203 for 5. With the outfield hard, bumpy and very fast the large total was still within Haverhill’s range. Ben Wilkins was first out with the score on 46; while Sam Harsthorn was beginning to show increasing confidence at the other end. A 60 run partnership between Hartshorn and Danny Gunn meant that Haverhill were keeping up with the run rate. Gunn out for a very good 30 and Hartshorn eventually out for a personal best 86, a lovely innings that surely suggests that this fast maturing young batsman won’t have to wait long for his first hundred. A few cheap wickets followed before a quick 22 not out from Steve Saville at the end meant that Haverhill fell 11 runs short. A loss, but the young Haverhill side can take many positives from the game. |
