 Brightlingsea 2nds - Home

Haverhill 2nds entertained unbeaten League Leaders Brightlingsea 2nds at Manor Road on Saturday . Both sides were full of young players as Haverhill had 5 under 18’s in the side . Skipper Wilkins won the toss and decided to field first after the previous weeks batting collapse .

Skipper Wilkins opened the bowling with the Lively Fox and although G. Bowler (45) was quick to punish anything loose kept the scoring rate in check on a very hot day . The first wicket fell to Steve Fox ( 3-55) with the score on 22 and although the Visitors were batting confidently , the bowling and fielding was tight and good spells from Joey Kettle (2-57) , Tom Saville (1-22) and Dan Webb ( 2-24) restricted them to a 45 over score of 198-8 . Some great catches were taken and a good fielding performance on a scorching day was very pleasing .

When Haverhill batted Steve Fox was promoted to open the innings with Sam Hartshorn as Skipper Wilkins had tweaked a hamstring and was hobbling around anxiously as usual . A steady start got Haverhill to 27 before Fox ( 12) was caught behind and the score moved to 46 before Hartshorn (29) was bowled . Greg Street (10) joined Phil Jones (8) and took the score into the 60’s before both fell in quick succession . With the score at 65-4 the innings was in the balance but a fine partnership between Dan Wilkins ( 16) and Jason Ketteridge (77 no) of  87 runs took the game away from Brightlingsea . Dan was out with the score on 152-5 and was hampered by a muscle injury but his experience was vital in the partnership . Jason played some glorious shots including a six into the Cinema car park and was in superb form . Joey Kettle then joined the party and hit a fine 30 not out to underline the talent that he undoubtedly possesses .

Haverhill won by 4 wickets with 5 overs to spare and inflicted the first defeat on a very useful Brightlingsea team . Overall a much better performance and the youthful exuberance of the team was key on a hot day . With the holiday season approaching the youngsters will be key to the rest of the Season
