Haverhill Sunday firsts vs Lakenheath
Haverhill lost the toss again for the fourth week in a row and were asked to field. With overhead conditions cloudy , this did not appear to be a bad thing. Woodley and Poole opened the bowling as ever. A Leech set about hitting any loose bowling, however, the teams were even at 37-1 off 11 overs as Poole removed Tuffs, well caught by Woodley. Davis removed C Palmer for 5 and this brought S Leech to the crease. Father and son proceeded to put a 98 run partnership, thanks again to loose bowling and selective hitting. Anthony Phillips bowled well without any luck finishing wit 0-43 off 7 overs. Sharpe finally removed A Leech for 84 and Woodley (2-50 off 10) returned to take 2 quick wickets, that of R Bond and S Leech for 54. Poole also finished off his spell with 2 wickets, one bowled and one well caught by wicket keeper Phil Dingley. Lakenheath by this time had amassed 253-7.
In reply, Joey Kettle was given an opportunity to open, however, he perished bowled for 5. Dan Poole and Steve Fox then put on one of the best partnerships of the season for the club. Fox (60) and Poole (76) hit a 144 partnership to give Haverhill a real chance. Fox milked the spinners giving the strike to Poole, who punished any wayward bowling. The pair batted 27 overs showing great grit, determination and maturity. Fox fell LBW with Haverhill needing 100 off 9 overs. This proved slightly too many as Davis, Wigan, Dingley, Phillips and Sharpe all gave their wicket away unselfishly for the cause of getting quick runs. It was left to Woodley and Williams to provide a quick flourish to propel Haverhill above 200 for maximum batting points. Haverhill finished up on 209-8.
