Haverhill 2nds played their second Home fixture of the season so far against Ipswich 3rds on Saturday . On an overcast breezy day Skipper Martyn Wilkins won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first . He opened the bowling with the nippy Steve Fox and both troubled the opening batsmen with swing and movement off the wicket . The first wicket fell with the score on 23 as Fox bowled the experienced G.Denny and N.Parmenter soon followed the same way with the score on 28. Tom Saville replaced Fox and bowled a very good six over spell taking 2-13 as wickets tumbled and the visitors were reeling on 62-7 . Then a good aggressive partnership of 64 between M.Smith (38) and J.Greig (31) doubled the score but overs were running out . Dann Webb entered the attack and continued his season’s form to take 2-15 to mop up the tail and end the innings on 154 all out . Wilkins bowled 15 overs and took 2-49 and Fox ended with 3-54 off of 13 overs .It was a much improved bowling performance all round this week but a couple of catches did go down but did not prove costly .
When Haverhill batted they suffered an early setback when S. Hartshorn was LBW for a duck but S.Taylor (12) and Greg Street took the total to 31 before Taylor was bowled . This brought Dan Wilkins to the crease and in company with Street put on 125 runs in good time to give Haverhill a comfortable win by 8 wickets . Greg Street scored 73 not out and although hampered by a groin strain batted powerfully and did not allow the visiting bowlers to gain any momentum . Dan Wilkins showed a great range of strokes and put away any loose bowling to score 62 not out . Thanks must go to Sam Hartshorn for running for Greg Street , as always with runners things can get complicated but all three managed to steer the Team home without too many alarms .
A very good win against experienced opponents and a very good team performance . Good tight bowling and aggressive batting again won through . This Season could be one of ups and downs and we should enjoy the victories but the next game will also be tough so we must not rest on our laurels . Let us hope we can continue our form as we travel to Nacton on Saturday . |
