ELVEDEN v HAVERHILL SUNDAY 2ND XI
13th JUNE 2010.
Elveden won the toss and batted on a very dry and dusty track. The Elveden openers were tentative and nervous and the scoring rate slow. After 10 overs with 24 scored the expectation was that the scoring rate would be increased. In fact nothing changed, runs only coming off bad balls and no chances taken on running. Naj Hoque made a breakthrough with an LBW. All Elveden’s batsman followed the slow and steady script as the rate continued at around 2.5 per over. With a double bowling change Haverhill started to dominate the batting instead of just containing it. Spinners Chris Thompson and Anthony Phillips taunted and tempted with great control, flight and turn. Thompson 2 for 31 from 8 overs and Phillips 4 for 17 from 10 were ably supported by some very good fielding and exceptional wicket-keeping from Alex Archer with two stumpings. Elveden finished their 40 overs on 104 for 7. Haverhill scored at twice the required rate from he start , Sam Hartshorn showing a return to runs with 17 , Anthony Phillips with a very good 36 . Two more quick wickets gave Haverhill the wobbles but sensible batting from Martyn Wilkins 36 not out and Alex Archer 12 not out saw Haverhill home with 18 overs and six wickets to spare. A total of nine wickets out of the eleven to fall going to spinners tells the tale of the track , but the game was well won in all departments by Haverhill. |
