Haverhill Sunday 1sts vs Woolpit.
Woolpit won the toss and batted on a hard and white wicket. Woodley opened the bowling and caused the South African professional A Northcote and Whiteman a few early problems. However great running between the wickets and well judged batting took Woolpit to 99-0 at drinks. Sharpe and Poole both bowled well for Haverhill but the wickets would not fall. Sharpe (10-0-72-1) removed Whiteman for 37 but Northcote destroyed all the bowling, reaching his hundred in no time. Young debutant Sam Pass impressed with his fielding and leg spin but Northcote pressed on regardless. He reached his 150 with the score on 223-1. Woodley (10-0-57-2) came back to remove Parker for 37 and finally Northcote for 180. Woolpit finished on an above average 306.
Haverhills reply begun poorly with both openers Hartshorn and Wigan departing for 0 to poor shots. Godwin and Poole rebuilt reaching 28 and a well made 42 respectively. Within an hour Poole, Bradford, Dingley and Proctor had fallen. Woodley made a fine 43 to top score and late flourishes from Sharpe (17*) and Kettle (21) meant Haverhill finished on a score of 171. This was 135 runs short of Woolpit’s 306.
