The first game of the new season saw Haverhill’s promoted Sunday 2nd side away to Sudbury 2nds at their beautiful Quay Lane ground bathed in April sunshine. Sudbury won the toss and batted with veteran openers Dave Shropshire and Andy Holness. The openers made a steady start scoring at four an over until Shropshire ( 18 ) was caught behind brilliantly by keeper Alex Archer , from Steve Fox’s pace bowling. Another wicket soon followed , bringing another very experienced and top quality batsman , Ivor Whitehart to join Holness. The pair batted solidly with Whitehart outscoring his partner. Whitehart reached his 50 first and the total was building ominously for Haverhill. New skipper Steve Saville put himself on to bowl and with Holness on 50 ,had him caught close in by Graham Brandejs. Good spells of spin by Chris Thompson and Anthony Phillips slowed the rate in the middle of the innings. David Saville got the much needed wicket of Whitehart for 75, caught in the deep by Steve Saville. A stumping by Archer and a fine diving catch from Craig Williams kept the game just in Haverhill’s favour with a total 187 for 6 by Sudbury.
Haverhill openers Sam Hartshorn and Anthony Phillips were superb from the start. Hartshorn dominated the bowling immediately and caused a double bowling change after six overs. Hartshorn 69 , Phillips 61 took the game away from Sudbury. The varied spin options brought on by Sudbury slowed the rate to the point where 4 an over were needed with 15 overs remaining. A three ball 14 runs from Alex Archer , and 28 not out by Craig Willaims saw Haverhill to victory by 7 wickets with 4 overs to spare. A great start to life in Division 4. |
