| Halstead III - Away |
 |
THOROUGHLY NICE DAY. It must be the early 1980's since I last played at the well appointed Star Stile ground at Halstead but always remembered the keenly fought matches and hospitality afterwards. In 25 years or so nothing has changed and a cracking game of cricket was followed by a cracking pint of lager. Sam H was first to go while practising the shot he should have played to the ball but unfortunately outside his crease and the alert keeper ran him out.A learning curve for Sam today as he got a bit of friendly advice from behind the stumps about his batting technique(Don't let it worry you mate, when you get a bit older they start calling you fat, bald, blind or all three!) Two wily left arm round spinners(proper bowlers) seemed to bamboozle our top order but Martyn and Mickey seemed to be getting their measure until Martyn, believing he had struck his first 6 for 17 years was taken one handed on the boundary by a stunning catch.Mickey cleared the fence on 6 occasions in a lusty 70 and yours truly and Joey thrashed a few to get us to 217. The Halstead skipper Richard Hume has had a frustrating time this season losing many of his players to the ones and twos but had his best side of the season on the park so defending our total was going to be tough. And so it proved as the home side accumulated runs at a steady rate without too much trouble. When Hume joined McBride a match winning partnership looked to be taking the game away from us and when Carl spilled a straight forward chance Joey showed his annoyance by volleying his cap into the top corner(If only Darren Bent could hit them so well the Spurs fans would love him). Martyn and Dan toiled away, got the breakthrough and nerves jangled with it coming down to 11 required off the last over.We restricted it to six so won by four. Best showers of the season so far followed by an amber nectar or two finished off a thoroughly nice day. |
