 Brettenham - Away

13th September 2009

Brettenham vs Haverhill Sunday firsts

An unusual poor bowling performance from Haverhill cost them victory in their final game of the season at rock bottom Brettenham in a game reduced to 36 overs a side.
After losing the toss, Haverhill were put into the field. With a tiny boundary on one side, the bowling would have to be disciplined and tight. This was not the case however. Dean Sharpe and Joey Kettle bowled with varied consistency and sharpe shelled a dolly of a catch off his own bowling. Joe Woodley was also guilty of bowling with ill discipline. The Brettenham openers had raced to 74-0 off 12 overs. Dan Poole bowled with good heart and control as his two wickets cost 55 off 9 overs as the batsmen took advantage of a fast outfield and short boundary. Rob Sullivan was the only other bowler to take any credit or positives from the match as he bowled 7 overs 1-28. Sullivan was very unlucky not to add to his wicket tally. Runs kept on flowing and Brettenham finished on 276-5. It could have been more had it not for some quick bowling from Russell Davis at the death.
With the light fading and temperature rapidly dropping, openers Adie Wigan and Rob Sullivan took to the field in pursuit of a huge total. Both started conservatively, playing themselves in. However, Sullivan fell on 8 trying to plunder G Brinkley into Sudbury. Wigan steadily built his innings while number 3 Russell Davis bludgeoned the bowling. Davis hit six 6’s hit the ball to all parts in his eventual score of 69. This gave Haverhill vital emphasis, however, the run rate required of 10 per over was too much. Dingley, Poole, Sharpe and Bradford all fell unselfishly trying to blitz Haverhill towards victory. Wigan continued to impress, reaching a well deserved half century and finished on 60. The teenage lower order of Joey Kettle and Callum Lewis put up some resistance and Watkins made a brisk 12. The nightmare was summed up for Haverhill when Watkins was run out. Haverhill had finished on 206 all out.
