Haverhill Sunday Firsts vs Hartest and Coldham 30th Aug 2009
Haverhill lost the toss and under cloudy skies, were put into the field by the visiting captain. Young Quick Joey Kettle opened the bowling with the experienced Rob Sullivan, and they immediately stamped their authority. Sullivan removed Hannon for a duck and Kettle had the Hartest opener, Hodge well caught by Sharpe. At 20-2 Haverhill went on the attack. However, Roberts and Bryant had other ideas and went on the counter attack. Both batsman charged the bowlers and smashed Kettle and Sullivan for some cheap boundaries. The fiery Kettle finally removed the dangerous Roberts for 26 and then bowled Richards for zero. Bryant continued to blaze away with the field still up, however, he ran out his partner, M Platt for 5. This was thanks to a bullet throw from Russell Davis. At Drinks, 16 year old Callum Lewis came into the attack in a bid to buy a wicket. He did just that, and lured Bryant into one shot too many. By this time, Hartest had fallen to 103-6. Lewis struck again and Haverhill were very much in the ascendancy. The tail got stuck in and repelled all Dean Sharpe had to throw at them. Even with some devastating yorkers and pace, the luckless Sharpe could only finish wicketless with figures of 0-23 off 6. Joe Woodley, Russell Davis and Joey Kettle all picked up a wicket each at the death to finish the Hartest innings on 158 all out. Pick of the bowling must go to 17 year old Joey Kettle, who finished with 4-37 off 7 overs.
After tea, Haverhill began chasing the 159 required for victory. Home Captain, Woodley had perhaps mistakenly allowed Hartest 20 or 30 more than they should have got, however, by the end this was irrelevant. Opening batsmen, Rob Sullivan and Adrian Wigan dominated from the first ball. Sullivan chanced his arm and hit the bowlers over the top, whereas Wigan hit some cracking drives and glances along the floor. The pair accelerated and accelerated the run rate, as if in competition with each other. Boundary after boundary was struck again the bowling attack. It really was a top class display of batting. Wigan finished on 70 not out and Sullivan on 76 not out. The 10 wicket win was summed up by Sullivan launching the ball over the car park netting. The win has now secured the division 2 Championship for the Haverhill Sunday Firsts. |
