23rd August 2009 Haverhill Sunday Firsts vs Hadleigh
Joe Woodley won the toss and batted on a typical flat and dusty Haverhill surface. Opener Rob Sullivan soon dispatched the highly rated opening bowler, S Bassett. They moved the score onto 16 before Sullivan guided a wide and low full toss to cover. Liam Savage joined Adrian Wigan at the crease and they put on 57 runs in 15 overs. Wigan was not at his fluent best but did his job of blunting the new ball. Savage slowly but surely got his eye in and punished any poor bowling. His innings of 54 was really high class. He combined well placed singles with destructive hitting over the infield. Wigan fell for a patient 22 and Dan Poole joined Savage. They also put on a 57 partnership before Poole holed out for 29, just as he was starting to get on top of some fairly tight bowling. Savage fell quickly after making his excellent half century and it was down to Phil Dingley and Russell Davis to bolster the run rate. They also combined quick running between the wickets with some power hitting. Dingley finished on 28 not out and Davis on 35 not out to push Haverhill to a score of 216-4.. After tea, Sullivan also opened the bowling with Davis. The Hadleigh openers were watchful but selective as they picked off any loose bowling. The unfortunate Davis was robbed of a wicket as the umpire failed to hear the huge nick to the wicketkeeper Carl Bradford. This only served to fire Haverhill up and back into the game. Woodley replaced Davis and immediately nipped out G Wiles. His spell then removed Clareaux, bowled for 14. Dan Poole replaced Sullivan and began to niggle away with his great line and length. Poole claimed the most important wicket, that of other opener, D Green for 34. He also trapped Patton LBW and Hadleigh had slumped from 48-0 to 69-3. With Haverhill now in the ascendancy, Davis returned to claim 2 quick wickets. Joey Kettle came on and made a breakthrough with his very first ball. He bowled with great heart and pace to finish with figures of 3-23 off 8 overs. Hadleigh finished up restricted to 154-9 off their 40 overs and the win all but secures Haverhill’s promotion as Champions of division 2. |
