Haverhill Sunday Firsts vs Edwardstone
Haverhill won the toss and decided to bat, knowing that the side batting first had lost only once at Edwardstone all season. On a wicket that was green, had very uneven bounce and differing pace, all Haverhill batsmen batted with great courage and skill. Openers Dean Sharpe and Rob Sullivan soon blunted the new ball with some well placed boundary hitting. With the score on 45-0 off 8, the decision to bat looked to have paid off. Sullivan perished caught at deep cover for a well made 24 and Paul Sullivan soon fell caught behind thanks to a very quick and leg cutting ball from Edwardstone skipper, Hayton. At 50-2 Haverhill needed a rebuilding job. Dan Poole marched to the crease and booked in for bed and breakfast. Poole and Sharpe ran hard and punished any poor bowling. Unfortunately Sharpe fell just before drinks for a gritty 27. Carl Bradford and Poole’s partnership of 111 ultimately decided the game. At first Bradford scratched around but he gradually found his feet, played himself in and eventually finished an unbeaten 45. Poole fell bowled off the last ball of the innings for 81. While they had taken some body blows off the lively pitch, they had propelled Haverhill onto 211-3 which looked to be too many at halfway.
Russell Davis and Joe Woodley opened the bowling for Haverhill and after 17 overs had restricted Edwardstone to 42-5. It was Davis who did all the damage, however, claiming all 5 wickets to fall. Davis bowled with great accuracy and pace whilst all the Haverhill fielders held their catches. Joey Kettle made an immediate breakthrough and continued to threaten with every ball. Chris Thompson, Sullivan, Dingley and Sharpe all bowled well. It was left to Woodley to rap up the tail to bowl Edwardstone out for a lowly 120.
