2009-07-26 HAVERHILL SUNDAY FIRSTS VS TUDDENHAM
Haverhill lost the toss and were asked to field first. This was an ideal result as Haverhill could boast 5 quality new ball bowlers within their ranks. Joe Woodley and Dan Poole opened up and begin very miserly. The pair restricted Tuddenham to 32-2 off 10 overs. Poole nipped out Smith and Preston with some unplayable swing bowling. Russell Davis replaced Woodley and set about trying to remove the stodgy and somewhat abrasive Campbell and also Tuddenham’s star batsman, David Cross. Davis eventually removed Campbell after a good catch from wicketkeeper Jon Watkins. Cross continued to frustrate Haverhill whilst wickets fell steadily at the other end. Kettle, Sullivan, Thompson and Sharpe all bowled well and chipped in with some wickets to leave Tuddenham shaking at 102-8. Cross bludgeoned some quick runs to push Tuddenham up to 146 before Woodley bowled Snoad to leave Cross stranded on a well crafted 56 not out.
Haverhill decided to bolster the middle order rather than overload at the top end of the innings, and in a way it worked out as they won by 5 wickets. However, by the 11th over, and at 38-4, this looked to have back fired on Woodley. For the second week running Haverhill had found themselves staring defeat in the face. Nigel Proctor and Davis both fell to contested LBWs, Joey Kettle got himself out caught bowled and Carl Bradford was bowled by a ball that nipped back off the seam. Phil Dingley and Dan Poole steadied the nerves with a 48 partnership in which Dingley contributed a fine 21. Once he fell, Rob Sullivan joined the solid and consistent Poole and these two batted with great sense and ability to get Haverhill back on a winning run. Poole registered yet another half century on a Sunday to secure his well deserved man of the match status and Sullivan finished on a quickly made 36 not out.
