Match Report for Haverhill Sunday Firsts vs Edwardstone 17th May 2009
After a ground inspection after several heavy downpours, the ground was deemed fit to play. Edwardstone won the toss and surprisingly chose to bat. Haverhill opening bowlers Muller and Davis bowled with good discipline to tight offside field. Once opening bat Partridge had retired hurt, Walker came on and burst through the defences of firstly, Taylor and then Colicome first ball with some lively bowling. Edwardstone never really got out of first gear with opening bat M Gooderham carrying his bat for an obdurate 69 not out. Woodley was the only other bowler to pick up a wicket thanks to a well held effort from Dingley. Kettle, Davis and Muller all bowled quick and contained some very average batting to restrict Edwardstone to 150-3 off their allotted 40 overs.
Haverhills reply began with Thompson carving the Edwardstone skipper, Hayton for four through point. Unfortunately he departed soon after to Elliot, bowled by a ball which seamed back in between the gate. Under a very grey sky Adam Dellar came to the crease. He savaged the bowling to all four corners of the Manor Road Oval and faced only 31 balls for his quick fire 47. Hayton was the wicket taker with a quick Yorker. Proctor was next to fall for a watchful 9. Haverhill had reached 73-3 off 11 overs. Despite needing only 150 for victory, Bradford and Dingley set about rebuilding and solidifying. Dingley perished for a run-a-ball 15 and young Joey Kettle joined Bradford. These two sensibly batted Haverhill towards victory. Bradford fell caught and bowled for a excellently crafted 25 and Davis entertained the crowd with a short but ultimately successful cameo of 18 to secure Haverhill’s unbeaten start to the campaign.
