WOOLPIT   v   HAVERHILL SUNDAY 2ND XI

6TH September 2009

In the final game of the season Haverhill batted first and sped away at a fast rate of runs for the first seven overs. Woolpit checked the rate back with a bowling change but Haverhill were well placed at 84 for 2 after 14 overs. Solid innings from Paul Spurling and Martyn Wilkins were followed by a mini middle order wobble which saw some cheap wickets fall and once again Haverhill failed to complete their allotted 40 overs, finishing all out 154 after 36 overs. Woolpit struggled with the required rate from the start and lost 4 wickets by the eleventh over thanks to the excellent opening bowling combination of Steve Fox and David Saville. Seven Haverhill bowlers were used and all contributed well to getting Woolpit all out for 107 meaning a Haverhill win by 47 runs. This win meant that in the team’s first year they have won the Division 5 championship. Team captain Graham Brandejs said what a pleasure it had been to skipper such a great group of lads and thanked everyone who had been involved throughout the season. Many young cricketers had developed their skills in this season and Haverhill CC will see the benefits in future seasons.
