BARDWELL v HAVERHILL SUNDAY 2ND XI
19th JULY 2009
Pitch problems at Bardwell meant playing at Culford School 2nd pitch. This was a truly awful wicket, green, soft, with inconsistent bounce and at times dangerous lift. This made for a very low scoring game. To make conditions worse there were regular showers and a steady breeze across the wicket. Haverhill batted first and were all out for 112, only Paul Spurling with 33, and Alex Archer with 19 showing any real resistance. With such a low total to defend Haverhill bowlers needed to use all their skill and get the most from the poor pitch. With silly mid-on and silly mid-off positions filled for much of the game, maximum pressure was put on the batsman to deal with the bounce at one end. This tactic paid off straight away with two wickets in Tom Saville’s first over. At 48 for 5 Bardwell looked beaten, but rallied well and made for a close finish. Bardwell were eventually all out for 95, Haverhill winning by 17 runs. Great performances from Tom Saville with 5 wickets for 35, Steve Saville and Steven Fox 2 wickets each and another fine wicket keeping display by Alex Archer.
