HAVERHILL SUNDAY 2ND XI v NOWTON ACADEMY
10th MAY 2009
Both Haverhill II’s and Nowton Academy fielded very youthful sides for the third home game of the season. Haverhill won the toss and batted , scoring steadily throughout the first half of the innings. A loss of cheap wickets in the middle order however and a tail that didn’t wag as well as last week meant that the score was restricted to 151 all out. Good batting performances from Sam Hartshorn , Anthony Phillips and Steven Fox are encouraging signs for the future. Nowton in reply were off to a slow start scoring only 52 in the first 20 overs due to very accurate bowling from Paul Turner and David Saville. After the drinks break the batsmen decided to attack our bowling with more vigour, immediately increasing the run rate. Losing their first wicket at 76 Haverhill were still edging this tight game. A fine 71 from Nowton opener C.Pettit put them ahead of the required rate but Haverhill kept pressing. Three wickets for Haverhill II’s thirteen year old Anthony Phillips and two wickets for David Saville kept the game very much alive , helped by two top drawer catches from Sam Hartshorn , until with two overs remaining the total was reached by Nowton with 4 wickets remaining.
