Acton 1st XI v Haverhill 1st XI
April 26th 2009
Haverhill Sunday 1sts new Skipper, Joe Woodley won the toss and decided to field on what looked a lively surface. It paid immediate dividends as young starlet Anthony Phillips held onto a great diving catch off the bowling of Woodley.
Acton then went about rebuilding until Kettle made the breakthrough with a fine catch from Dingley. Martin and Fisher set about attacking the bowling with an express 50 partnership. This was aided by some very poor ground fielding from Haverhill.
Dan Poole recovered from some early damage to claim 3 quick wickets to rescue Haverhill. Woodley returned to replace the accurate Dean Sharpe and bowled Nuhell and the very dangerous Border with some fiery bowling. By this time, Acton had reached 150-7. Kettle claimed another scalp and Poole earned his fourth wicket with some very canny swing bowling. Acton finished with 197 all out. Captain Woodley finished with 3-31 and vice captain Poole finished with well deserved figures of 4-74.
In reply, Wigan and Proctor began steadily to give Haverhill a solid platform. When Proctor departed for 3, Poole strode to the crease. He dominated from the beginning and soon got the run rate going. Wigan became the first victim of Garner and this brought Carl Bradford to the crease. Both played positively and took the attack to Acton.
Poole registered his first 50 of the season with a scorching cover drive and Bradford played with great maturity and restraint. When Bradford fell just 3 short of a well deserved half century, Dingley and Phillips soon followed. Haverhill were wobbling. Woodley steadied the ship with a watchful 14 and Watkins unselfishly run himself out in an attempt to push for quick runs. This brought hero of the moment Dean Sharpe to the wicket. Needing 18 off 3 overs, Poole and Sharpe pushed for victory. The tired Poole perished for an excellent 70 and Haverhill ended up needing 6 off the last ball to win. Sharpe proceeded to march down the wicket and plant Garner into the trees for 6 to send the large Haverhill away support into raptures.
