Opening bowlers Dan Poole and Joey Kettle worked hard but a combination of solid batting and some poor fielding meant the scoreboard moved quickly. After twelve overs , bowling changes saw Dean Sharpe followed by Sam Harsthorn bowling at one end , while Steve Saville operated from the other.

The rate slowed slightly but the two openers continued to bat very well . It was not until the 31st over that Steve Saville got our first breakthrough getting Leech LBW for 84. Four more wickets fell in the innings , including the late dismissal of opener Frith for a fine 102 . He went to a catch by Sam Harsthorn off the bowling of Dan Poole. Lakenheath’s innings closed on 231 for 5 .

Haverhill started brightly enough with openers Carl Bradford and Dean Sharpe staying together for twelve overs and adding 43 to the total . Three wickets then fell in the space of three overs and the task was looking increasingly difficult. Only Dan Poole stayed around for any time after that scoring a fine 68 in his typically reliable way. Haverhill finished their innings at 163 for 9 , 68 short of the target.

Haverhill were without three of their top order batsmen and their two regular opening bowlers , so while this was a defeat , the youngsters who were given a chance in the side did not let themselves down . It was a good experience for them from which their confidence will grow in the future.
