The home side elected to bat on a belter of a track and after the early loss of Bradford, Steve Taylor and Phil Jones progressed the score steadily to 60 before Jones was adjudged LBW. Luke Youngs then joined Taylor and this pair batted exquisitly with shots all round the park and the Eye bowlers had no answer and the partnership of 180 was only broken when Taylor played an understandily tired stroke and was dismissed for his highest ever score for Haverhill for a magnificient 143.Youngs continued to tick the scoring over and finished on a sublime 83no as Haverhill posted a formidable 265-4.
The Eye opening batsman showed what a good pitch it was as they attacked from the off and it wasn't until the 14th over when Martyn Wilkins removed both the openers in quick succession with the score on 84.
However, this meant that D.Whiting, the visitors prolific run scorer was at the crease and he punished any loose bowling and he and Rowntree pushed the visitors to 170 before Mick Rinaldi made the breakthrough. Wilkins returned for a second spell to remove Whiting and with the run rate rising wickets started to fall and Eye were eventually bowled out for 225 in the 42nd Over giving Haverhill victory by 40 Runs, Wilkins finishing with 4-66 and Rinaldi 3-37.
Skipper Julian Poole said 'A big win for us as it gets us one step closer to promotion.Especially pleased for Steve Taylor as he has been struggling a bit this season but I knew he had a big one in him.Luke Youngs also batted with maturity above his years and with Martyn Wilkins and Mick Rinaldi showing their experience in the bowling attack, it was a fine overall performance' |
