Haverhill were asked to bat on what soon became apparent was a bowler friendly pitch and scoring was at a premium.Corinthians opening bowler Radford is the leading wicket taker in the league and he must lovebowling on his home surface every other week as his nagging line and length is ideally suited to the conditions.
At 20 overs, Haverhill had fought they way to 56-3 but then lost 4 wickets for no addition to the total and were really up against it but a spirited and patient partnership between Julian Poole(35) and Dan Webb(12) at least ensured the visitors reached the hundred mark but the final total of 109 off 40 overs was never going to be enough.
Haverhill realised the only hope of victory was to crowd fielders around the bat and pressurise the Felixstowe batsman but familiarality with the pitch conditions meant the openers were very watchful and waited for the bad balls to score off.
Haverhill did remove a couple of the home sides batsmen with Webb and Hoque each taking a wicket but a couple of dropped catches didn't help the cause and Felixstowe eventually reached their winning target in the 32nd Over to win comfortably by 8 wickets.
Skipper Poole said ' I could role out the excuses about having an understrength side or playing on a minefield of a pitch but too many of our batsmen got out to rash shots and have to realise you have to be able toadapt your batting style for all surfaces and play accordingly.Corinthians are a very good side and deserve to betop of the table but we must regroup for this Saturdays important home match versus third placed Eye. Promotion is still very much in our own hands and a victory this week would take us a long way to achieving this seasons target of going up' |
