Haverhill won the toss and batted on a slightly soft track at Thurston . Considering the amount of rain that had fallen on it in the previous week it showed good work from the local groundsman to have got the game on at all.
The quick departure of opener Carl Bradford was a worrying sign but Liam Savage came in and kept his nerve against a good opening attack from Thurston. He and Adrian Wigan put on a partnership of 85 before Savage was very well caught for 35. Adrian Wigan , playing beautifully was joined by Dan Poole . An early dropped catch on the boundary was a blessing for Dan Poole and Haverhill and a very costly one for Thurston . Very powerful hitting from both batsmen in great form saw a massive 161 run partnership amassed before Dan Poole was out with a personal best score of 90 . Adrian Wigan carried his bat for the entire innings for an invaluable score of 122 not out and with it a 40 over Haverhill total of 270 for 5.
Thurston were always going to be under pressure with a 6.5 per over run rate required from the start . Opening bowlers Russell Davis and Joe Woodley made it difficult for them with pace and accuracy , and at the end of their 12 over opening spell had the score at 47 for 1 wicket. With the run rate slowly rising the Thurston middle order did their best to hit the bad balls to all parts of this picturesque ground , but paid the price with regular wickets . Three wickets for Dan Poole , three for Dean Sharpe and two late in the innings foro Liam Savage . With the last wicket falling in the last over with a score of 196 , Haverhill had won by 74 runs . Next weeks game is away to Mellis. |
