Woodley lost the toss and was pleasantly surprised to be told to field. Under overcast skies, Russell Davis and Dan Poole swung the ball around corners to leave Lakenheath three wickets down in no time at all. Attacking field placings brought a more disciplined line and length from Davis who picked up the valuable wicket of Lakenheath skipper Milner. Poole was unfortunate not to collect more than his initial two wickets with Haverhill guilty of shelling two or three sharp chances in the slips and gully.
Poole was replaced by the underrated Dean ‘Pat’ Sharpe. Once he had got over his initial excitement, Sharpe bowled with great variation of pace and showed the he could swing the ball both ways. Like Poole, Sharpe was also unlucky not to pick up more wickets with further drops off difficult chances. Lakenheath began to knuckle down to the task and put a partnership together via Hensby and Trett. Good field placings and superb bowling all round from Sharpe and Saville ensured boundaries were at a premium.
With 8 overs to spare, Poole returned to the attack and picked up the wicket of the dangerous Trett for a well crafted 44 and finished up with 3-47. Kettle picked up two cheap and quick wickets to keep the runs down in the final few overs and Lakenheath finished on 130-8.
Haverhill began their reply with the evergreen Neil Mitchell and Adrian Wigan. Once the score had reached 5 however, Mitchell was unlucky to be caught by a flying fielder one handed at point. Wigan soon followed LBW, leaving Haverhill staring down the barrel at 20-2.
Poole joined Godwin to form a perfect partnership. Godwin played the watchful Graham Thorpe role while Poole confidently bludgeoned his way to an unbeaten 75. Their partnership of 56 arguably decided the game.
Once Godwin fell, the out of form skipper Woodley battled his way to 8 before holing out trying to finish the game quickly. It was left to Liam Savage (6 not out) and Poole to finish off a resilient Lakenheath side. Poole had returned to the team and confirmed his man of the match status with a brilliant all round display while battered the ghost of the last game thrashing from Brockley. Haverhill Won by 6 Wickets. |
