Unfortunately, stand in skipper Phil Jones lost the toss and it was no suprise that Haverhill were asked to bat first. However, the in form Carl Bradford and Chris Thompson set about the task with a careful and well constructed opening partnership with some good defence and the occasional lusty blow.
Bradford(40) was the first to go with the score on 65 after 18 overs. A couple of wickets fell cheaply before the experienced Jones(27) and Jon Watkins(22) steadied the ship with some useful middle order runs.
Rus Davis hit a quick fire 30 including 3 sixes and some sharp running at the end of the innings saw Haverhill post 164-7 in their allotted overs.
It soon became clear that the visitors had posted a good score on the wicket as Brockley's openers struggled against the accurate bowling of Nurul Hoque(1-16) off nine overs and Davis(2-10) off seven and in fact after 20 overs the home side had crawled to 35-3.
The introduction of Paul Turner, playing his first weekend game of the season, ensured Haverhill had the game in the bag as his 5 over spell of swing and seam bowling yielded him 5 wickets and reduced Brockley to 72-8. Some lusty late order hitting ensured the home side got over 100 but a wicket each for youngsters Joey Kettle and Sam Hartshorn saw them dismissed for 113 and giving Haverhill victory by 51 runs. This result saw them go to the top of the table for the first time since second team league cricket on Saturdays was introduced at Manor Road.
Skipper Julian Poole who was away at a family wedding said' With first team call ups and holidays I was a bit apprehensive about the result today as the team looked slightly weakened on paper but I needn't have worried as all the replacements as well as the regulars stepped up their performances once again.I was especially pleased for Paul Turner as he's been in my ear for a couple of weeks looking for a game and he puts in a great five wicket haul.It gives me a selection headache for our game at Kelvedon this Saturday but its a good problem to have'.
