Sunday side make hard work of it!
Haverhill won the toss and fielded on a warm and overcast afternoon. The Haverhill opening bowlers Russell Davis and Dan Poole were very effective both in removing the dangerous Mellis openers and in keeping the score down .

By the end of their opening spell of 6 overs each the score was 36 for 3 . Steve Saville and Joe Woodley then took over and between them removed the remaining 7 wickets for only 42 runs.
Steve finished with fabulous figures of 4 wickets for only 12 runs off 6 overs and Joe Woodley with 3 for 27 off 6.5 overs . Steve Saville deservedly earned the man of the match from the Mellis skipper. The innings was over for a total of 78 in only 25 overs, a great performance in the field by Haverhill.
What followed in the form of Haverhill’s batting was about as far removed from their bowling performance as anyone could imagine. A combination of over confidence, complacency and some woefully inept batting contrived to make the 79 required runs look like a mountain .
Only Neil Mitchell, David Saville and Dan Poole went about the task with the required concentration to the job in hand . The runs were eventually got after 21 overs but with the loss of eight wickets . |
