With only forty minutes played the score was 72 for 1 , Carl Bradford having been LBW to the Thurston skipper Andrew Bendall. By this time the sky was getting darker and the rain became too heavy to stay on . The teams left the field until play was possible again , meaning a reduction in overs being agreed between captains.

After the resumption, Haverhill continued in steady fashion with Adrian Wigan and Neil Mitchell batting solidly. With 90 runs in the partnership , Mitchell was bowled for 34. Dan Poole came to the crease and hit a very quick 30 including two sixes . At the end of the reduced innings of 35 overs , Adrian Wigan had carried his bat for the whole innings and was not out on 72. Haverhill had reached a very creditable 198 for 4.

Thurston’s reply started in steady fashion with openers Baker and Wallis getting the score to 37 before Steve Saville took his first Sunday team wicket , that of Neil Wallis well caught by Neil Mitchell looking into the sun.

This brought Andrew Bendall , Thurston’s captain , to the wicket. Two runs later and Steve Fox bowled opener Baker for 15. The score now 39 for 2 after 13 overs suggested a very long uphill struggle for Thurston , but a great innings of  75 not out from Bendall and hard hitting support from Walsh 26 and Malcolm not out 39 turned the last 7 overs into a nail biter. Before this Bendall and Malcolm were punishing our bowlers at every opportunity and got Thurston to the position of needing 26 to win from the last 2 overs . Sixteen came from the penultimate over , leaving Russell Davis the unenviable task of bowling the last over .

With the field spread to the boundary and accurate and controlled bowling from Russell Davis only six were scored , meaning a win by 3 runs for Haverhill. A great team effort , man of the match for Haverhill being awarded to Dan Poole for his 30 runs and 3 wkts, bowled at much reduced pace due to injury.
