Outgunned at Lakenheath!
Lakenheath won the toss and batted on a pitch that was green in the middle and a dust bowl at both ends . The outfield was equally poor , some parts dusty dry , some of it a mixture of grass and weed , all of it uneven and very difficult to field on . This is not making excuses , both teams had the same pitch conditions , it just makes me feel very pleased and proud that Haverhill enjoys such a well kept ground to play on and host our visitors.
Lakenheath , mindful of their defeat at Manor Road earlier in the season , and their league position, drafted several 1st teamers into their side for this game. Two of those 1sts opened , and made their intentions clear from the first over . Their first wicket partnership of 70 set the scene for the rest of their innings . Our bowlers worked well , but were all set about in merciless fashion by the opener Shane Leech. He was bowled by Russell Davis on the last ball of their innings for 130 , out of a total of 252 for 4 wickets .
Haverhill’s batting reply was a mixture of poor to average displays with three notable exceptions . We saw a fine , and now almost to be expected, innings from Dan Poole (57) . Later in the innings there was an excellent 63 not out from Joe Woodley accompanied by last man in Dan Webb with 25 very good runs. Not enough runs earlier from the higher order meant a final total after 40 overs of 206 . Haverhill lost by 46 runs . Next match is at home to Horringer on Sunday 19th August , so why not get yourself ready for Haverhill’s game against Lashings world XI on 23rd by coming down to Manor Road next Sunday and watching your local team. |
