Skipper Poole had to play himself with a damaged finger but won the toss and decided to bat.
Haverhill openers got off to a brisk start but unfortunately an array of rash shots saw the visitors reduced to 60-4 in only 12 overs.
Playing their first games for the seconds, Dean Sharp and Sam Hartshorn came to the crease and batted with great composure and rebuilt the Haverhill Innings with a stand of 74 before Sam was caught.
Another youngster, Joey Kettle joined Sharpe and both grew in confidence and attacked the bowling and Dean completed his first half century for the club and was finally out for an excellent 73.
A couple of wickets fellquickly resulting in Poole having to bat but he held up one end enabling Kettle also to make his first 50 for Haverhill and the visitors closed on 225-8.
Shortage of bowling options together with the inclusion of W.Shropshire in the Sudbury batting line up was always going to make defending the total a tough one but some ill disciplined bowling saw Sudbury off to a flier.
Shropshire was hitting the bowling to all corners but unfortunately for Haverhill he was dropped 3 timesand with the other batsmen playing merely asupporting role the opener went on to make an impressive 165 Not Out which saw his team home by 6 wickets with 8 overs to spare.Once again the best Haverhill bowler was Dan Webb with 3-67 from 15 overs.
Skipper Poole said' Another good batting show by some of ouryoung players but the Sudbury opener was a class apart and took us apart.Overall, an enjoyable first season for there-formed Second XI and many youngsters in the club have shown what talent they have anda bright future forHaverhill CC is envisaged.
I'd like to thank all the players for their effort this season and also a specialmention for Jon Watkins and Micky Rinaldi who continue to turn out excellent wickets for us to play on'. |
