 Lakenheath - Home

LAKENHEATH 207 for 6 ( 5 pts ) lost to HAVERHILL 211 for 1 ( 18 pts ) by 9 wickets.

A brilliant undefeated century by stand in Captain Neil Winter secured a superb victory for Haverhill on Saturday.

Haverhill were without Rob Sullivan, Joe Woodley & Greg Street for this top of the table clash with local rivals Lakenheath. There were debuts for 14 year old Josh Meekings & 13 year old Luke Youngs. The home side also fielded a 16 year old and three 17 year olds.

On the hottest day of the season Winter lost the toss and Lakenheath choose to bat. This decision seem to backfire as Martyn Wilkins claimed two early wickets. The scoring was slow as Wilkins ( 10-3-20-2 ) and Russell Davis ( 7-1-21-0 ) kept the batsman in check. This was not to continue as Shane Leech (40) and Dick Bond (29) put together a useful partnership. Adam Dellar ( 8-0-54-3 ) picked up wickets at vital stages one to a superb running catch on the boundary by Kieron Ewens as the visitors tried to post a challenging score. Meekings bowled his first overs at this level and returned very respectable figures. (5-0-17-0). Greg Palmer (35) batted well until he was stumped by Dan Wilkins off Simon Youngs and some hard hitting by visiting Captain Dan Reynolds (50 no) managed to move Lakenheath up to a respectable 207 for 6.

The home side needed a good start and they got it. For the 6th time in 8 matches that they have opened together this season Neil Winter and Simon Youngs put a half century opening partnership on. Winter looked in great form in his first innings in 3 weeks due to an injury. Youngs (33) departed with the score on 84 setting the perfect platform for Adam Dellar to arrive at the crease. Winter was finding the boundary with ease as his class stood out above everyone and once Dellar had settled he too despatched the ball with confidence. The fielders were wilting under the hot sun and heads were dropping. Winter went to his second century of the season with another four as he guided his team towards victory. The final word goes to Dellar as he reached yet another half century when hitting the winning runs.

So Haverhill remain top and push Lakenheath nearly out of the running. It looks like three teams for two promotion places as the season draws to a close. Haverhill, Kelvedon & Tuddenham although Mildenhall are putting in a late charge. Next week Haverhill travel to Dunmow and then to Brockley the following week and then on Saturday August 25th their final game of the season at home to Kelvedon.

Stand in skipper Neil Winter says...
" This is a great win for us. It's the second time we have beaten Lakenheath comfortably this season and as they are one of our main rivals it more pleasing. The youngsters in the team can all be proud of themselves and it makes things easier for us older guys when the boys field like they do. It was a really hot day but we stuck at it and got the result we needed. Personally its always nice to get runs but the team winning is what its about at this level and it was an honour to captain the side in Rob's absence."
