Haverhill won the toss and batted . Openers Neil Mitchell and Graham Brandejs found the bowling difficult to get away due to accurate bowling from Barber and Meekings and very inconsistent bounce off the pitch .
With the score at 17 Brandejs was bowled by Meekings , to a ball that went under the bat. Dave Godwin came in to find the same inconsistency in bounce and pace off the pitch , out for ten after mistiming a ball and skying a catch to mid-wicket.
Neil Mitchell was then also undone by the pitch , caught for 22 , going through with a drive to a ball that was slow in coming on to him . Dan Poole , coming in at number four was so nearly out to his second ball , jabbing down just in time on a ball that rose no more than three inches from the opening bowler Josh Meekings .
Two wickets in two balls followed , reducing Haverhill to 60 for 5 . Joe Woodley now joined Dan Poole at the wicket and thankfully Haverhill got a partnership going . Boundaries were proving difficult with a lush outfield , but Poole and Woodley were keeping the scoreboard moving with some excellent running between wickets .
A match-winning partnership of 79 followed , including three sixes between them before Joe Woodley was caught for 36 on the long on boundary going for another big shot . With the score now on 139 , it was vital that as much bowling as possible was given to Dan Poole , tail end wickets fell until Dan Poole , 68 vital runs , was the last man out with the score at 156 . Considering the pitch Haverhill had done well to get a 150 plus score .
Haverhill’s opening bowlers Phil Weston and Russell Davis bowled with pace and accuracy from the start and showed the Cavendish openers how difficult a task they had before them.
The first four overs costing only two runs and including two wickets in an over for Russell Davis . The opening spell of 14 overs were devastating for Cavendish , Davis taking another two wickets in an over , Phil Weston adding another one . Fourteen overs gone , the score 25 for 5 .
Two more wickets followed in the next two overs , one more from Phil Weston , in his last game for the club before moving back to his native Yorkshire. The other , a first wicket in his first over in his very first senior game for the club from young David Saville .
Cavendish now reduced to 28 for 7 off 16 overs . The beginnings of a recovery now showed with Cavendish wicketkeeper Skelton coming to the wicket with stand in skipper Blackburn .
Together the pair showed their higher order how it should have been done with good resistance and shot selection . At this point one of the most unusual of injuries befell the unfortunate Dan Poole during his second over . Halfway into his run up he was hit in the mouth by a wasp travelling at a similar speed in the opposite direction . The wasp bit Dan on the inside of his lip causing a very large swelling and considerable pain . Dan left the field soon after for a rest and painkillers , not being able to return until very close to the end of play. Meanwhile Skelton and Blackburn were causing a few Haverhill nerves to jangle with their batting . Skelton eventually reaching 51 before being well caught behind by Andy Burrow off the bowling of Joe Woodley .
Soon after , Woodley and Davis mopped up the tail ; Russell Davis’s figures 7.3 overs , 4 maidens , 5 wickets for 12 runs . This left Blackburn with a fine 31 not out . Cavendish all out 106 , a good win for Haverhill by 50 runs . |
