| Haverhill vs Ipswich
Haverhill won the toss on a slow and wet wicket and took the new ball. Rob Sullivan (11-3-25-1) and Martin Wilkins 13-5-26-1 tied down the opening batsmen and provided the initial breakthrough with both bowlers bowling tight and to their field. Simon Youngs (12-1-50-4) was introduced and continued to apply the pressure with tight line and length bowling. At one stage being on a hatrick which failed to materialize. A superb piece of fielding from Sam Powell, brilliantly supported by Dan Wilkins with the gloves to run-out skipper and opening batsmen Adam Polley (66) was a highlight in the field. The short spells from Joe Woodley (2-0-18-0) and Adam Dellar (5-0-29-0) proved costly. Tight bowling had to be re-applied in the form of Sam Powell who bowled 2-0-11 at the end of the innings brought Ipswich back to an achievable but competitive score.
Ipswich 8-173
Haverhill got off to a very good start with openers Simon Youngs (26) and Neil Winter (56) providing the platform to launch an assault on the score. Scoring rate was sporadic however in difficult conditions they almost outscored Ipswich two to one. With Neils departure at 1 for 71 and Youngs providing the backbone Sam Powell (20) arrived and looked very solid and was getting himself settled when poor shot selection surfaced, a backward sweep, difficult at any level, left the stumps open and broken a moment later. Adam Dellar’s (15) technique was solid as ever but he took a wonder down the track to a short spinning delivery and was found well short of his crease, stumped. Dan Poole (11) struggled in the slow and wet conditions, preferring the ball to come on, a short stay but valuable at this stage of the innings. Minor contributions from Dan Wilkins (4), R Sullivan 10 Not Out, Dave Godwin 2, J Woodley 1, Martin Wilkins 2 Not Out closed out a very lack lustre batting chase.
Haverhill 9 for 162
Captain Says:
A week in politics they say is a long time. With the same team selected Haverhill went from playing a superb all round performance against Mildenhall to an all round below par performance against Ipswich.
In most aspects of the game we where outplayed. Our middle order didn’t continue the good work done by the opening batsmen. We didn’t apply enough pressure in the field and most importantly we didn’t bowl to our field and we didn’t accelerate our scoring rate through the final overs. Ipswich did accelerate well, they bowled to their field and they fielded very well.
Having said that the positive is the opening bowling spells with bat and ball were of a very high standard. We need to get back on track and repeat our commitment to hard played focussed cricket where we utilize our experience and youth to deliver high quality play. We will bounce back hard our team has done it before. |
