Haverhill Sunday team were away at Mildenhall on the only day without rain in that area for the last 6 days. Despite this the pitch and outfield were in tremendous condition, a real credit to the groundsman .

Haverhill were asked to bat and got off to a steady enough start with openers Graham Brandejs and Neil Mitchell taking the score to 28 before Brandejs was bowled .
Liam Savage briefly joined Neil Mitchell for a quick 13 before departing to a catch from a mistimed shot. Dan Poole came in with the score at 51 for 2 but quickly departed to a top edged hook without scoring .
Carl Bradford arrived with the score still acceptable at 64 for 3 . What followed was a collapse of batting that I haven’t seen before with the Sunday side and sincerely hope I don’t witness again .
The bowling was changed at one end and on came a sixteen year old off spinner, Jason Moore. He bowled extremely accurately and spun the ball well , but he also had the effect of becoming the car headlights to the mesmerised Haverhill rabbits .
Neil Mitchell was his first wicket off his first ball , Neil had batted well for his 21 runs. Two more wickets fell in his first over . While Carl Bradford managed to play well against the spinner by getting forward and covering the spin , he had to watch a quite dismal display from successive partners at the other end. One after another waited , mostly without any foot movement , for the bowler to add to his tally. The young spinner’s figures at the end were 7 wickets for 14 from 8.1 overs. Haverhill had managed to go from 64 for 3 to 122 all out , with Carl Bradford lasting until the end with a valiant 42 runs.
Mildenhall opened with two left handers , who settled very quickly and moved the scoreboard at around 5 an over for the first 6 overs . Opener Cornell was brilliantly caught at mid off by Carl Bradford off the bowling of Dan Poole with the score at 31 .
Turner now joined Zafi Kulasi , so there were now two young left handed bats at the crease . In fact had they been needed , five of the top six Mildenhall batsmen were left handers. I mention this not because left handed bats are that unusual , but because it was , besides the abysmal middle order batting collapse , another significant factor to the eventual result .
Our bowlers failed to adapt their bowling sufficiently , and consequently paid the price by being hit regularly over the leg side boundary . The end was quick and decisive with Kulasi ending on 86 not out , Mildenhall had won by 9 wickets. |
