With rain threatening and a delayed start, the captains agreed to reduce the game to 35 overs per side,
Stand in skipper Phil Jones, deputising for the injured Julian Poole, lost the toss and Haverhill were asked to bat.
On a fairly wet wicket, runs were always going to be hard to come by, but Jones and Steve Taylor started positively until Jones was bowled with the score on 20.Three further wickets fell soon afterwards and Haverhill found themselves on a precarious 40-4.
Taylor was joined by Rus Davis and this pair batted sensibly together to bring the hundred up in the 22nd over.Unfortunately, bothTaylor(44) and Davis(40)were out soon afterwards.A controlled inningsby Jon Watkins helped push the score to 134-9 from the allotted overs.
Brockley made a slow and cautious reply due mainly to the tight bowling of Hoque and Davis and a much improved fielding display.
At the halfway stageof their innings, the home side had been restricted to 40-2. The change bowling of Rinaldi and Webb kept things tightand things swung Haverhill's way when a smart catch by Chris Thompson removed the dangerous Reed. With the run rate climbing, Haverhill kept their bowling and fielding up to scratch and restricted Brockley to 122-7 and so recording a 12 run victory, Dan Webb finishing with 4-32.
Injured Skipper and now Team manager Poole said ' Great to see the lads back to winning waysafter a couple of close defeats. The discipline shown in the bowling and fielding departments was excellent, and if the batting starts to click we will become a tricky opponent for anybody' This Saturday the Seconds are at home to SudburyIII. |
