Rear Guard Action Stuns Lakenheath
After three weekends without Sunday cricket due to bad weather or no scheduled fixture it was a very welcome relief to see the sun shining on the Manor Road ground and the pitch looking in great condition .

Lakenheath won the toss and batted but soon lost their first wicket with the score on 12 . A stand of 38 runs followed before Steven Fox bowled the Lakenheath number 3. With the third wicket falling with the score at 57 things were looking good for the home side . However , opening bat Palmer together with partner Plump put on a stand of 64 good runs before Palmer was caught off the bowling of Phil Weston . Four down with the score on 121 after 30 overs was about even with both sides competing well . Haverhill bowlers Woodley , Poole , and Weston then increased the pressure with fine bowling removing the last six wickets for 55 runs . Lakenheath batted out their allotted 40 overs with the last man run out on the last ball .
The total for Haverhill to aim for was 176 , and with a good looking top order hopes were high . Lakenheath opened with a combination of pace and spin , with spinner Tobbit soon causing havoc among our batsmen . Things were looking grim for Haverhill after ten overs , we had lost our top five batsmen for a score of 38 , with spinner Tobbit taking 4 . The ship was steadied by Dan Poole who with Steven Fox put together a partnership of 39 , followed by a partnership of 27 with Graham Brandejs . Dan Poole finally went for 41 runs with the score on 112 for 6 . With 12 overs remaining it fell to Joe Woodley and Dean Sharpe to bat under increasing tension towards the total . Dean Sharpe was out caught for a fine innings of 31 , and in went our last man Phil Weston to join Joe Woodley .
Seventeen required from the last three overs meant a nail biting watch for all concerned , but steady heads from both batsmen saw Haverhill home for a victory by one wicket with an over to spare .
Too close for comfort , but a very satisfying win none the less . |
