Haverhill II entertained Brockley II at the Manor road ground with both teams needing a win to consolidate their positions in the league. The game started early due to the England game and turned out to be a real nail biter with Haverhill winning on the penultimate ball of the match, which incidentally, is the third time in a row this has happened between the two sides, with Haverhill coming off the better in all three encounters.
Brockley batted first and got off to a slow start with opening bowlers Nurul Hoque and Kieron Bailey keeping the scoring down to a reasonable rate, Hoque took the first wicket of Fisher for 4, Joe Reed then found his rhythm and began to hit the ball all around the park taking Bailey for 24 in one over to change the whole dynamics of the game. Dave Warburton (21) kept Joe company for most of the Brockley innings, helping Joe to amass a magnificent 127 before he was stumped by, arguably man of the match Jon Watkins off the bowling of Dan Poole.
There was a brief flurry at the end with Trev Jackson making a swift 18 so the Brockley innings ended on 210-7 with Terry Pinckney finishing with 3 wickets and Dan Poole with 2.
Haverhill began brightly but opener Julian Poole went cheaply for 11, Dan Poole (34) and Martyn Farrant (32) kept the home side up with the required rate with some excellent scoring shots. This brought spinner Joe Reed into the attack who got rid of Terry Pinckney (11) first ball leaving Adam Nicholls and Jon Watkins at the crease to finish off the job. Adam swash buckled his way to 24 but the overs were running out and the rate was climbed to 8 an over. Jon continued accumulating his runs and was joined at the crease by Russell Davis who smashed a brief but productive 18 leaving 13 to win off the last two overs. Jon was tiring at this point but with 6 to win off the last over a desperate call saw Jon run out for an excellent 33. This left Kieron Bailey the task of getting three runs off the last two deliveries and in majestic style…some would harshly say fortunate he swung his bat and with military precision top edged a quick one over the wicket keepers head for a four down to third man, game won.
Skipper Nurul said “another great game with Brockley, made all the better with a victory which could have gone either way, they must be sick of the sight of us and we wonder what the away game has in store for us!”
