Back to winning ways. Webby Spins a win!!
After last weeks trashing by Sudbury, the second team had to knuckle down and get back on track to winning ways. They travelled over to Walsham who had not won a game all season but in the past had a voodoo over the town side so victory would have to be earned.

On a muggy afternoon it was felt that after winning the toss Haverhill should have a bat, a decision which would have been welcomed the previous week!!
Father and son openers Julian and Dan Poole set about the task in a solid and responsible manner and began to put together a useful partnership. With a lush outfield both openers found it difficult to find the boundary even with full blooded covers drives so there was plenty of running to do, much to the dismay of Julian!! Eventually Dan Poole went for 28 after an opening stand of 74.
Left hander Neil Mitchell continued the high tempo, taking the aerial route in the majority of his scoring shots which seemed to be the most productive, he quickly moved on to 32 before holing out on the boundary. Julian finally succumbed to a slower delivery, edging it to slip for 74 and was glad of the rest. He had set the foundation for a formidable total.
To the crease came Mick Rinaldi who decided that he was not going to hang around too and gently accumulate, after seeing the bowling for an over he proceeded to take the Walsham attack apart and hit 51 off the next 21 deliveries taking the score beyond 200. Once Mick departed Russell Davis and Jon Watkins made a cameo effort to take the score to 224-6 which already was a big ask for the home side.
Walsham began their innings fairly tentatively with openers Nurul Hoque and Russell Davis containing the runs. Russell cleaned up Bryant for 8 before a stand of over 50 was finally broken by Mick Rinaldi who got rid of Lynn for 27. The home side did not have too much in the way of batting in depth although Mark Rotham (35) and Jim Wright (24) made a fist of it before Kieron Bailey and Dan Webb finally sent them on their way. Dan Webb took a season’s best of 6-44 with some excellent spin bowling which the home side found too awkward to handle. The rest of the card fizzled away and Walsham finished on 154. Haverhill winning by 70 runs.
Skipper Nurul Hoque thoughts “A good all round team performance today against a genuine second eleven which made the competition enjoyable. Great performances by Julian, Mickey and Dan today and it will be nice to continue this form against Brockley next week.”V |
