Youngsters do the business
After a month of watching the bad weather ruin weekend cricket, the second team finally got out onto the pitch to entertain local rivals Stansfield in a match sponsored by SW Electricals. Both teams were missing key players, however the main difference was Haverhill could call on a couple of first teamers to help out, Stansfield had to play with 9 players.

The home side had a bat first and were soon a spot of bother when opening bowler Simon Stone uprooted Julian Poole’s middle stump for 5 in the third over. Dave Godwin and debut man Martyn Farrant knuckled down and began to build an impressive partnership, exploiting the lack of numbers in the field to good effect. Dave Godwin finally was out lbw to Nigel Brunning for 24 bringing Adam Dellar to the crease. He and Martyn began plundering the be-leaguered Stansfield attack to all parts of the ground. After 20 overs the home side were pushing 130 runs so a big total was on the cards. The pair took their chances and had a couple of let off’s in the field, but the runs kept flowing until eventually Dellar was caught by Brunning for 65.
Martyn, ably supported by the new batsman Dan Poole, went to his century with a boundary and was eventually out, caught a mid wicket for a magnificent 108. finally Kieron Bailey joined Dan at the crease and put on 44 in the last 4 overs to register the highest total scored by the second team at the Manor road ground of 288.
To be honest, this total was always going to be beyond Stansfield so it was all about bonus points and hoping that it did not rain too hard. Another debutant Dean Sharpe opened the bowling with Kieron Bailey. The runs were kept under control with Bailey taking the first wicket of the innings, Spearman caught Sharpe for 15. Rob Sullivan, skipper Nurul Hoque and Dan Webb each chipped in with a wicket a piece. The fun started when mercurial batsman Nigel Brunning and captain Steve Hale came to the crease and opened up their shoulders, which under these circumstances from a home side point of view, with the game lost, was a bit of fun. Hale holed out to Hoque for 44 and then Brunning got cleaned up by Dellar for 12 to close out the innings with Adam Dellar having a good day finishing with figures of 4-15 off six overs.
Skipper Nurul Hoque said “Finally a game, we had a strong side today but I am looking for more commitment from the second team squad, if we are to do well this year we need a settled side. I am pleased with the result, it will be a different story at Stansfield, it always is. Martyn was fantastic today and he adds depth to the batting line up. Sudbury next week which will be tough as they have plenty of talented players” |
