Opening pair Neil Winter (71) and Simon Youngs (23) got Haverhill off to a flying start with Neil exploiting very wayward swing bowling from one of the opening bowlers who didn’t return to the attack with figures of 2 overs for 31 runs. A solid opening partnership on a difficult wicket of 77 runs before the first wicket fell.

A Dellar is going from strength to strength with trade-make aerial flicks through mid wicket and a cracking cover drive for 48. A momentary lapse in concentration was all that was needed when he moved across the wicket to reveal his leg stump to the off spinner.

Strong support from Dan Wilkins whose front foot drives where powerful and well timed with the occasional glimpse of some old bad habits he managed to build a base of 24 but the before mentioned got the best of him and he failed to go on with what is expected to be a good year for the solid middle order batsmen.

Haverhill 8 for 217

St Margarets started well however opening bowler R Sullivan, after some verbal motivation from the opposition started to find some of his old rhythm only to be let down by an old injury and had to finish his spell early with 10 overs 2 for 18. The occasional bouncer was brought into play for the first time this year and made the batsmen take evasive action on a number of occasions. Still bowling wayward at times but a good spell. He was supported by Dan Poole (7 overs 0 for 29) very well who’s figures are no true indicator of his line and length. Both bowlers were supported well by the fielders with a sharp catch to D Godwin and a good “effortless” catch to first slip by S Youngs.

Martyn Wilkins (8 overs 2 wickets for 22) and S Youngs (8 overs 2 for 23) provided the pressure to the middle order needed to put the game out of reach. Once the pressure was felt by the opposition spin was applied and the game was soon over with Adam Dellar finishing with 4.5 overs 3 wickets for 29.

St Margarets All Out for 160.

Haverhill win by 57 runs.

Personal comments:

Throughout my time as Captain and as a player for the past two years I have noticed that at times the team would go through a quiet period on the field. A bowler may have been hit for consecutive boundaries or a straightforward catch dropped which brings on the dropping of heads and the silence. During this period is when we have to dig deep and keep pressing on. A reversal of luck makes an immediate positive impact and brings the team back up to boiling point but when it lingers, when it goes on for over after over it spreads and before you know it, the opposition are on top and have put on 50 in 6 overs.

Congratulating players when they are involved in taking wickets is obviously all part of the game but to maintain a general positive atmosphere on the field from the first ball to the last is as just a big part as celebrating the wicket with the wicket takers but you need to let the other players know that your there, supporting everything they are trying to do for the team.

Sometimes we forget that we are all taking part in the same game and when we struggle with the heat or the situation in the game our team-mate is most probably in the same position and having just as much trouble. A supportive word or gesture is usually all that’s needed. Lets keep positive.
