R Sullivan and Joe Woodley opened the bowling and had immediate success in removing two wickets for just 9 runs before Wivenhoe skipper and E Hardwood set about building a good top order partnership of 85 runs. R Sullivan took the vital wicket of the Wivenhoe skipper for 78, which opened up the game and allowed Adam Dellar to tear through the remaining batsmen finishing with 8.3 overs 6 wickets for 48.
Although Wivenhoe where obviously undermanned they did well to construct a defendable score of 145. A number of issues however where against them, the outfield was extremely fast, Haverhill had their strongest batting line-up this season and the top order batsmen have been in brilliant form. If Wivenhoe didn’t bowl well and field well it was going to be a quick end to the game.
Neil Winter (88) and Simon Youngs (57) combined great play with sharply run singles and even managed to run a couple of three’s to the enjoyment of the small but vocal Haverhill crowd. Neil’s explosive opening over scoring 3 fours through the off side set the tone for the innings. Simons strong leg side aerial shots were sweetly timed and run to the boundary at a fast pace.
At times the run rate was balancing between 8 and 10 runs per over.
Haverhill 0 for 149
Personal comments:
England’s campaign to win the world cup may have more of an impact on this teams success than I originally anticipated. We managed to field our strongest side of the year this week however some players where noticeably away with the pixies. This also seemed to distract me from the task at hand at times and I will need to be aware of this should “when” England get through.
Australia hasn’t been in the World cup for 30 years and “stone the crows” if England and Australia make it through. It was at times, during the Ashes, that biting my tongue and nodding in defiant agreement became daily responses to probes from English cricket fans trying to get a rise. I wait with bated breath.
When England get through I am concerned that attention to the games maybe just a little redirected to the World Cup. I can appreciate this and trust that we can work around it.
I dream of seeing Australia play England in a World Cup match, although highly improbable, I would have to admit my mind wouldn’t be 100% focussed on the cricket either.
