 Kelvedon - Away
Haverhill CC continues with good form in difficult conditions.
(or Wilko finds what to do with his bat two weeks in a row!!)

Haverhill won the toss and decided to bowl against Kelvedon CC last weekend. The wicket was soft and not an ideal surface for either batsmen or bowler. The game was reduced to 40 overs per side to assist in gaining a result.

Last games injury to Russell Davies (fractured finger) brought back Joe Woodley (5,0-24) into the opening bowler position, perhaps a little sooner than recommended. Joe bowled waywardly at times however was also unlucky on a number of occasions to not have claimed a wicket. Rob Sullivan (19-6-53) bowled well, however struggled with his line and length on a slippery popping crease.

Adam Dellar (8- 0 –39) once again showed his flexibility with the ball attempting a number of well flighted deliveries and faster off spinners. Adam bowled well troubling the batsmen on occasion.

A catch to M Wilkins and a solid well executed catch in the deep to D Poole, taken in very dark, wet conditions were also worth a mention.

At about the 37th over the heavens opened and in weather only ducks would enjoy Haverhill stayed on the field and saw the innings to a close. The umpire offered Haverhill the opportunity to leave the field and it was refused.

Kelvedon 7 for 176

A delay to the start of the Haverhill innings was due to Rob Sullivan (Haverhill Cpt.) reluctance to begin his team’s innings on a very poor, mud soaked pitch. After a drawn out discussion with the opposition captain, who continually broke conversation and proceeded to walk away shaking his head. Rob Sullivan agreed to a start under the provision that any rain and the game was over.

What a disastrous start, first ball Golden Duck to S Youngs and a duck to M Wilkins meant that we were 3 for 2. The captain’s decision to play on an unsuitable wicket was about to back fire. The captain was seen pacing the boundary for the first 6-7 overs.

The middle order needed to perform and the change of the batting line up to move Neil Winter down the order came off perfectly. Haverhill turned the tables on an initially confident, at times cocky Kelvedon with a good start from Adam Dellar (16th birthday – 18) – shouldered arms to a ball that nipped back outside off and claimed the top of off stump. Another good knock to Dan Wilkins (52) who’s straight hitting early on is a delight to watch, he once again hauled out early and missed a great opportunity for a big score. The disciplined innings of the day goes to N Winter (62 N.O), at times he looked to get bogged down but then exploded into a flurry of shots and squeezed singles from very tight opportunities, offering great support to his fellow middle order batsmen in Greg Street (25), fantastic placement and strong cover drives, Steve Taylor (9) strong defence and a cracking cover drive brought the game to a close with overs to spare, and another win to Haverhill – 4 out of 4.

Haverhill 6 for 177

Personal comments:

I have played in poor weather conditions before where the possible change to conditions, the pitch and the potential rain should be discussed in an openly, friendly, manner between captains but never have I had to chase the opposition captain around the pitch and look for him in the dressing room at the change of innings. At one time having a conversation at long distance, length ways down the wicket with approx 20 metres between us. I must have be very intimidating.

The team performed very well in atrocious conditions however if we are maintain our good start to the season we will need to work harder in terms of concentration and commitment to one another. At times during the down poor it was evident that a number of players were struggling with the conditions and the pace of the game. This is where we need to step up and be counted. Concentration lapsed and the fielding, although in the swirling rain, did drop off considerably. We need to show greater commitment to one another both verbally and in our body language. Something I am sure we can all work at and will improve.

If Haverhill CC is to reach the heights of playing the highest standard possible that our junior cricketers can enjoy in the future we need to build a culture of success through hard work. A culture that on the field is to never give up and to support your team mate’s whatever the situation. A closely knitted club that will thrive in difficult challenging situations and achieve success on the field, drawing people both players and administrators to a successful, vibrant, committed environment. A team with a strong culture of pulling together and supporting each other’s success is only way forward.
