 Copdock - Away
 It's a Family Affair....!!!

Haverhill CC first eleven travelled to Copdock, near Ipswich last weekend. On a weekend where extreme weather, namely storms with lightening and thunder predicted by the weather bureau were predicted to have an impact.

Having lost the toss Copdock decided to bowl considering the onset of poor weather. The pitch was firm and looked to be that of a batting deck.

After a minor delay due to rain, the game got underway to a disastrous beginning with Haverhill loosing last week’s high scorer Neil Winter (0) from the second ball of the day caught at slip without troubling Webby, our belligerent team scorer. Simon Youngs (35) steadied the innings with a combination of stylish -shots with power and quick singles. Neils early departure brought our steadiest batsmen M Watkins to the crease and with Youngs they managed to push the score onto 54 before Simon attempted to turn a slower delivery and caught a leading edge, a very good confident knock. D Wilkins (41) arrived at the crease under considerable pressure due to some recent poor form and needed to make amends, he did. Cracking ground cover shots through the infield, both straight and through mid-wicket he reached 41 before his departure. A steady, aggressive innings of what any top order batsmen would be proud of.

A Dellar (15) looked comfortable as he always does but to his disappointment while batting was out sooner rather than later. Soon to be glee while bowling, there was plenty of turn and was unfortunately he was bowled by a strong tweecker, which came back and took the top of off stump.

D Poole (11) came out swinging and timed a few well-placed shots before being caught in the outfield.

The Innings of the day belonged to M Wilkins (96 n.o). Having arrived at the wicket during the first over, he didn’t leave the ground until the last ball had been bowled, a tremendous effort. Hitting the ball to each corner of the ground along the turf and in the air, he chipped and drove extremely well, even bringing out the cow corner slog when he thought there was nothing left in the tank. He was a great example to junior and senior cricketers alike of how to build an innings and maintain concentration over 3.5 hours. His best innings at Haverhill to date.

Haverhill 5 for 205

Copdock didn’t start as well and were under considerable pressure early on. On a wicket that slopped considerable to one end and a slight breeze over his right shoulder R Sullivan caused the initial breakthrough (4 wickets, 2 maidens, 13 overs for 40) removing both opening batsmen. R Davis (5 overs for 10 runs without a wicket) once again bowled above his years offering good support to his fellow opening bowler.

With the absence of Joe Woodley additional bowling power needed to be introduced and although struggling with his line a few times Paul Turner (4 overs- O Wicket for 15) did the job well and provided a good alternative to the old crew of Martin Wilkins (recovering in the deep from 96 N.O) and Simon Youngs. Adam Dellar who played and missed a spinning ball when batting was brought into the attack to make things difficult on a turning wicket and “early-on” he did. He spun the ball well with better line and length and didn’t stray. Adam had great figures of 8 overs, 3 for 25 runs when his last over was to considerably alter his good start, Adam’s well known custard-arm must have been twitching. J Cuff (112 n.o) decided to take to Adam with no regard for a deeply set field, he despatched a number of balls into the bush (without a bounce) and Adam finished with 9 Overs, 3 for 50. Figures are sometimes cruel.

Copdock 8 for 171

Haverhill win by 34 runs.

Personal comments:

I never shy away from the opportunity to learn more about cricket while in this country and I was about to be shown another aspect of cricket I hadn’t seen before. I was suitably impressed by the local ground staffs efficient display of rolling the covers out and removing them effortlessly. One point did strike me as strange in that it wasn’t raining, or there was no rain. Perhaps the new looking covers had been a late Christmas present.

The team is looking good and with having played three seconds players and have three wins so far this year I am confident that we are developing the depth needed to approach the higher grades of cricket in this area over the coming years, if we continue to achieve success and support growth on and off the field we will get there. The junior cricketers within the first eleven are coming along very well and with over 50 more players between the ages of 10 and 15 training each Thursday night at our home ground I am a little less reluctant to hang up the spikes and rest the weary bones, we should be in good shape in the coming years. Haverhill’s cricket club is your cricket club, a family club full of people who want the best for the club and its community, come on down and join in, in whatever capacity you wish. We can always do with another pair of hands.
